The Jesuit Archives & Research Center (JARC) invites researchers to use the collections. You may submit your requests to the staff by the Archives Request Form, e-mail, letter, or telephone. In any request, please include the following information: your name, mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number, as well as the subject, location, and time period of the topic. We will reach out to you within four weeks about your research topic.
It is the responsibility of the researcher to examine the unrestricted materials in the collections. We are sensitive, however, to the challenges of travel involved in historical research. We will provide up to one hour of research on behalf of a researcher. This hour includes any time spent scanning to provide the researcher with digital copies of materials in the archives. Digital copies of archival materials will be provided at the discretion of the staff, depending on the amount and condition of the materials.
Beyond this hour, the researcher may examine the materials during a visit to the archives or may arrange for contract work with a professional assistant. Please reach out to us using any of the means listed above if you would like guidance on how to hire an outside party to complete research on your behalf.
Research at JARC
JARC is open to all researchers regardless of academic affiliation or status. Researchers under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult in order to access materials in the collections. Please see the Visiting the Archives tab for more information about scheduling a visit to the archives.
Researchers using the Reading Room at JARC will be required to read and acknowledge certain guidelines before beginning their research. These guidelines will be presented to the researcher upon arrival in the Reading Room, but can also be read here: Reading Room Guidelines.
Access Restrictions
JARC seeks to provide equitable access to historical records for research purposes. Certain categories of records may be restricted from general use or subject to limited access. At all times, accessibility to records for research is balanced against protection of privacy and confidentiality. The Access Policy provides information about restricted materials.
Use and Publication of Materials from JARC
Researchers wishing to publish or distribute materials from JARC collections must complete the Use-Publication Form. Upon receipt of the completed form, we will be happy to work with researchers to obtain digital copies sufficient for publication. We may also ask researchers to complete this form when receiving digital copies of materials even if the materials will not be distributed.
You may refer to our Professional Use Fee Structure for a breakdown of costs for various uses of JARC materials.
